With This Breath I Fly
“Questo film è dedicato a tutte le donne afghane che stanno lottando per un futuro migliore”. Si chiude con questo cartello “With This Breath I Fly”, lo straordinario e commovente documentario che con disarmante semplicità ci mostra la realtà della condizione femminile in Afghanistan. Gli autori, Sam French e Clementine Malpas, hanno seguito per dieci anni le storie di due donne: Gulnaz, una giovanissima ragazza violentata e messa incinta dallo zio, e Farida, sposata e madre di una bambina, costretta a fuggire dal marito violento e pedofilo. Entrambe sono state imprigionate con l'accusa di "crimini morali" e condannate a pene durissime da un sistema giudiziario che non distingue tra le leggi dello Stato e quelle tribali. La storia si svolge nel decennio che precede il ritorno dei Talebani, durante l’occupazione internazionale che sosteneva il governo del Primo Ministro Karzai con ingenti finanziamenti, parte dei quali spesi proprio per riformare il sistema giudiziario afgano. Seguendo le sorti delle due donne, emergono anche i tentativi dall’Unione europea - che inizialmente aveva commissionato il film - di censurare le loro voci e la successiva mobilitazione della stampa internazionale per sostenere la lotta di Gulnaz e Farida. Ma la loro purtroppo è una storia dal finale amaro, come per l’Afghanistan.
